Arcade Fire
Central Park Summerstage
New York City
September 15, 2005

David Bowie joins the Arcade Fire in Central Park, September 15, 2005

Imagine yourself in the middle of Central Park on one of the last muggy nights of summer. You’re watching one of the hottest new bands when all of a sudden, David Bowie walks onstage and starts singing with them. This was the Arcade Fire’s concert in September 2005. The show was awesome—the band’s complicated songs sounded great live and Bowie could not have made a better surprise guest.

Arcade Fire is based in one of my favorite cities and a great music town, Montreal. After only one album, 2004's Funeral, they have earned an excellent reputation among indie rock lovers and more established musicians, including Bowie and David Byrne of Talking Heads, who has also appeared with the band.

The crowd buzzed with energy and excitement as the band took to the stage wearing their trademark all black, looking as if they were really going to a funeral. When Bowie later came out in a crisp white summer suit and hat, it made for a striking visual contrast.

The New York City crowd was talkative, preoccupied with their cell phones and generally oblivious as usual, but that didn't diminish the band's energy level and enthusiasm. Bowie's seal of approval is more confirmation that this is one of the most talented young bands out there. Their debut album proved it, and their live show proves it again.

Between the music, the band's theatrical energy, and David Bowie's surprise appearance, the Arcade Fire show was a great way to end the summer.
